Counselling
We help those in Wanganui and the surrounding region. We also assist those who
have no support group in their area.
All counselling is by phone or email. If you don’t hear from us in a few days, contact us again. All counselling is free but donations are welcome.
If you would like counselling, please email us using our contact page.
Health history: Have a complete medical check-up with your doctor. This is important because your symptoms may have nothing to do with allergy or food intolerance.
Counselling begins with a health history which helps indicate whether allergy is likely involved. This takes around half an hour by phone or we can email the questions to you.
If you have an allergy history, you will be advised to see your doctor for allergy skin tests or RAST
blood tests. If you have no allergy history, we will help you choose a two-week elimination diet.
In some cases the source of the problem can be pinpointed during the first conversation.
See example below:
Case History
Woman suffered from cluster headaches and sometimes had five migraines a month.
Her doctor had prescribed medication.
Headaches are often caused from caffeine so the first question was about caffeine. This includes tea, coffee, chocolate and other drinks that contain caffeine.
Question: How much caffeine are you having? Do you drink tea or coffee, for example?
Reply: I drink coffee. My doctor told me to cut down but that didn’t work.
Question: How much coffee are you having every day?
Reply: Seven cups.
Comment: Just a minute. Your doctor told you to cut down.
Reply: I did.
Question: How much were you having before?
Reply: Twelve cups.
Solution: Slowly reduced caffeine drinks over several days to prevent severe withdrawal symptoms.
Result: Headaches gone. Energy levels up. Fuzziness in head gone.
Caffeine is a drug so it’s important to reduce it slowly as withdrawal symptoms can be severe. If you suddenly stop your caffeine drinks, you could have your worst headache within twenty-four hours.
